Maria Kossak’s visual work builds upon the dialogue between temporal and spatial dimensions. She explores the historical connotations of gold and its ambivalent mediation between material power and spiritual transcendence, employing it as a marker of cultural references and as an index of the broader social values associated with it. She revises the iconographical usage of plated gold and adds to it a powerful metaphor of collective and personal longing. Her colour schemes range between earthy, morbid tones and palettes that shimmer with a translucent light. This subversive blurring of fixed styles, genres and time periods suggests a restless movement of moods and materials that is characteristic of Kossak’s creative impulse. Drawing on deeply personal experiences while transcending autobiography, she examines how memory, trauma and healing shape our perception of ourselves and the world around us. Her work asks where resilience originates in times of uncertainty, crisis and profound societal change.” Dr. Stephan von Wiese, curator.
