sound of the earth

Sound of the Earth I-III is an homage by Maria Kossak to the paintings of Mark Rothko.

As an animated triptych of abstract paintings created with gold pigment, ink, and watercolour, through layered surfaces, fluid transitions, and subtle contrasts of light and colour, the works invite the viewer to look slowly and attentively. The physical triptych has been in a private collection since 2015.

The triptych explores aesthetic perception as a sensuous and contemplative experience. Rather than conveying a fixed narrative, Sound of the Earth I–III opens a space in which the viewer can approach my personal artistic perception through material, rhythm, atmosphere, and the gradual emergence of form. Through animation, the three paintings extend beyond their physical surfaces and enter a gentle state of movement. The animation does not illustrate a linear story; it makes visible the inner movement already present in the works. Together, the works form a meditative visual experience that encourages stillness and an open, attentive way of perception.
