The story of Pygmalion and Galatea in Ovid‘s Metamorphosis tells of art becoming imbued with spirit.
Maria Kossak finds in its essence a metaphor for the artist‘s longing that their work will come to life – embodying both the sculptor caught in a visionary moment and Galatea, the symbolic object of his creative inspiration.
Wrapped in shimmering silk, the breathing artwork is suspended between worlds. It forms the spectacle of a white rhododendron flower, illuminated by dawn’s early light and brought forth into life as a mystical union between dream and reality.
