Fragility

FRAGILITY, BEAUTY AND RESILIENCE

I see nature as a great teacher of beauty, resilience and fragility. In autumn, leaves fall and swirl in their own dance, in harmony with the rhythm of becoming and disintegrating. There is grace in this release, and an innocence that offers orientation in times when humanity stumbles into war and we find ourselves frozen in the grip of repeated trauma and caught in unresolved conflict.

Technique: Silk, plated gold, gingko leaves and gold pigment painting on canvas 160 cm × 120 cm × 2 cm

Ginkgo leaves, gathered from nature and woven into the work, stand for resilience and symbolise the natural cycle of death and renewal. Gold can be found in the dark, if we look beyond our fears and embrace the darkness we can find our inner strength. Turning inward, we discover the resources to find our way, and with them, the possibility of a turning point. This painting draws on the qualities of fragility, beauty and resilience. As an artist working across painting, performance and new media, they are a great resource to me in my own process of becoming. The pain and limited mobility associated with my disability often results in exhaustion and feelings of devastation and hopelessness. Yet something within me carries the seed of renewal. With this work I attempt to tap into those regenerative qualities. Fragility is not the opposite of strength, but part of how life continues and evolves.
