Dark Night of the Soul

Dark Night of the Soul grew out of living with chronic pain, repeated setbacks, and the feeling that the ground keeps slipping away beneath my feet.

Living with a severe disability, I experience, year by year, a growing loss of physical agility. This sense of loss regularly confronts me with feelings of despair, isolation, and a sense of being cut off from the world. When making the work, I was searching for orientation, layer by layer. An almost monochromatic surface took shape, each layer a way of expressing what I could not say with words.

Ginkgo leaves, gathered from nature and woven into the work, stand for resilience and symbolise the natural cycle of death and renewal. Gold can be found in the dark, if we look beyond our fears and embrace the darkness we can find our inner strength. Turning inward, we discover the resources to find our way, and with them, the possibility of a turning point.
